Finally, Redemptoris Missio subscribes to the idea that the praxis of dialogue is “a method and means of mutual knowledge and enrichment” (RM 55) and advises that “those engaged in this dialogue must be consistent with their own religious traditions and convictions, and be open to understanding those of the other party without pretence or closed-mindedness, but with truth, humility and frankness, knowing that dialogue can enrich each side” (RM 56). Authentic dialogue must also reach “a much deeper level, that of the spirit, where exchange and sharing consist in a mutual witness to one’s beliefs and a common exploration of one’s respective religious convictions” (DP 40). In view of this, the ultimate aim of dialogue is “a deeper conversion of all towards God. . . . In this process of conversion ‘the decision may be made to leave one’s previous spiritual or religious situation in order to direct oneself towards another’ ” (DP 41). These teachings of the magisterium of Pope John Paul II are addressed to all people involved in interfaith dialogue, including the Christian participants. This means that Christians must also see dialogue as an occasion for mutual enrichment, where both parties witness to one another and both are led to a deeper conversion, including the possibility of leaving one’s religious situation.
